The vernier caliper is one of the most widely used mechanical instruments for linear measurement of exteriors, interiors and depths. It is believed that the vernier scale was invented by a Portuguese named Petrus Nonius. The current vernier caliper was developed later, in 1631 by Pierre Vernier.
The vernier or vernier that current calipers have allow easy readings up to 0.05 or 0.02 mm and 0.001″ or 1/128″ depending on the graduation system used (metric or English).
